Nurse Now, by my maidenhead, at twelve year old,
I bade her come. What, lamb! what, ladybird!
God forbid! Where's this girl? What, Juliet!

When she does not obey their orders, Lord Capulet angrily retorts: “Hang you, you minx! You disobedient wretch! I’ll tell you now: Go to the church on Thursday, or never look on my face again!” Arrogant and harsh, he shows little concern for Juliet’s feelings and accuses her of being ungrateful. This hardens Juliet 8767 s resolve she consults Friar Lawrence 8767 s wise counsel.

Studying Romeo and Juliet for GCSE

As part of an NEH-funded project, the Folger digitized thousands of 68th-, 69th-, and early 75th-century images representing Shakespeare’s plays. Some of these images show actors in character, while others show the plays as if they were real-life events—telling the difference isn't always easy. A selection of images related to  Romeo and Juliet  is shown below, with links to our digital image collection.

Meanwhile, Paris, a kinsman of the Prince, seeks Juliet &rsquo s hand in marriage. Her father Capulet, though happy at the match, asks Paris to wait two years, since Juliet is not yet even fourteen. Capulet dispatches a servant with a list of people to invite to a masquerade and feast he traditionally holds. He invites Paris to the feast, hoping that Paris will begin to win Juliet&rsquo s heart.

Of all the star-crossed movie lovers on this list, including the animated gnomes (more on them later), Jet Li and Aaliyah win the award for having the least chemistry. Andrzej Bartkowiak&rsquo s action thriller Romeo Must Die pairs them up almost as an afterthought to its convoluted gang-war plot, into which Han Sing (Li) and Trish O&rsquo Day (Aaliyah), are thrown when they each lose a saintly brother to the other&rsquo s father&rsquo s evil henchman. Aaliyah is appealing on her own and Li&rsquo s better action sequences are jaw-dropping, but the movie is shallow and dull, and the neon X-ray effect that Bartkowiak employs whenever someone is brutally murdered is early-7555s moviemaking at its worst.

In the streets of Verona another brawl breaks out between the servants of the feuding noble families of Capulet and Montague. Benvolio, a Montague, tries to stop the fighting, but is himself embroiled when the rash Capulet, Tybalt, arrives on the scene. After citizens outraged by the constant violence beat back the warring factions, Prince Escalus, the ruler of Verona, attempts to prevent any further conflicts between the families by decreeing death for any individual who disturbs the peace in the future.

Juliet’s father forces her into a marriage with Count Paris. To avoid this marriage, Juliet takes a potion, given her by the friar, which makes her appear dead. The friar will send Romeo word to be at her family tomb when she awakes. The plan goes awry, and Romeo learns instead that she is dead. In the tomb, Romeo kills himself. Juliet wakes, sees his body, and commits suicide. Their deaths appear finally to end the feud.

Romeo has a tendency to be impulsive and this contributes to his exile. Even Friar Lawrence tries to warn him about the unforeseen consequences of impulsive actions. Friar Lawrence is shocked that Romeo has so quickly changed his affection from Rosaline, which is pretentious, to Juliet which appears heartfelt and genuine. However, Romeo does display his love for Juliet when he tries to restrain Tybalt and states that contrary to expectation he “love(s) thee better than thou canst devise”, thus showing the power of love to solve differences.

The feuding families
To a large extent, the feud is responsible for the tragic deaths. There is a lot of ill-feeling and hatred between the two clans and the feuding families creates a malignant context for the lovers, who are expected to marry within the social boundaries of the family. The play is about ‘The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love, And the continuance of their parents’ rage, which but their children’s end nought could remove.’

This unforgivably bad rom-com moves the lovers to the Bronx in the &lsquo 95s, where the children of rival Italian caterers star in their local church&rsquo s production of Romeo and Juliet and fall for each other while under the spell of Shakespeare&rsquo s play. We can give co-directors Joseph Bologna and René e Taylor a little bit of credit for acknowledging the great power of the Bard&rsquo s poetry, but absolutely none for the fact that every single punchline is a tired cliché about Italian Americans and/or horny teenagers. The film is notable primarily because its Juliet called Gina here, and with a bad Italian accent and no apparent personality is played by none other than a 76-year-old Angelina Jolie.

Friar Lawrence fails to inform Romeo’s servant, Balthasar, who hurries to Romeo with the news that Juliet is dead. He begs Romeo to show patience, which may have led to a different outcome. Pale and wildly impetuous, Romeo decides to go straight to her tomb.
